Growing Capsicum Bell Peppers

BELL PEPPER 

There are two kinds of bellpepper- one is the pungent kind and the other not. The firstis used in food manufacturing where they are processes asspice and sold as food condiments. The other, non pungent,is the ordinary kind sold in markets.

A hectare of pepper can accommodate27,600 plants that are about 60 cm apart from each other.

Bell pepper likes a warmclimate, fertile soil that does not lodge water; it is goodto plant it at a time when the sun shines abundantly in thatplace.

 

COMMERCIAL SCALEPLANTING

As in thepreparation for other plants,

1. Plow the field to removeweeds and their roots. Harrow afterwards.

2. Repeat after a week soas long to remove remaining weeds whose seeds have now germinatedsince the first plowing.

3. Repeat a third time after5 days for same reason.

4. Dig holes 60 cm apartfrom one another, 15 cm deep.

5. Before transplanting theseedling, put about 4 cm deep compost at the bottom (if insummer) and 10 cm compost on top ( in rainy weather) to facilitatewatering.

6. With this preparation,prepare the nursery for seedlings.

 

PREPARATION FORNURSERY

The nurserybed for bell pepper is about 1 meter wide with the soil about10 cm high.

1. Mix a can (kerosene can)of compost for every square meter bed.

2. Place dried coconut leavesabout 5 cm thick over the bed for burning. Remove the piecesleft unburned.

Water very well the nurserybed and compact the top with the aid of a spade or flat wood.

3. Line the bed with stringscrossing one another, about 6 cm apart, Thrust a stick tomake a hole at every intersection into which drop e seeds.

4. Cover with fine oil 1cm deep and press with the finger.

5. Use spray water in wateringso as not to dislodge the small seeds. Water only during earlymorning and late afternoon. If it rains, put a proof overthe seedlings.

 

FERTILIZER

The best fertilizer for soilis compost (or decomposed farm wastes). In its absence, thefollowing commercial fertilizer may be used as follows:

1. Mix 80 grams urea in 16liters with 3 tablespoons Lannate - Benlate combination. Fungicideand pesticide may also be included. Spray every seven days.

2. When the seedling areabout 4 weeks old, pass a sharp knife through the rows, about2 cm deep or more to make the branches grows from the mainstem.

3. The seedling canbe transferred to the field in about 5 weeks.
